Dr Felipe Sierra / “Les vendredis de l’Oncopole”: Geroscience in Inspire: Distinguishing Geroscience from Aging Biology
9 octobre 2020 @ 13:00 - 14:00
Dr. Felipe Sierra, Gérontopôle, projet Inspire, Toulouse
The geroscience hypothesis states that since aging is the major risk factor for all chronic diseases affecting the elderly population, addressing aging will lead to a significantly better health outcome than addressing individual diseases one at a time. This is an attractive hypothesis that rests on recent advances in our understanding of aging biology, which show that the rate of aging is highly malleable.
Toulouse is a world-known center for geriatrics and gerontological research. The launching of the Inspire project represents a culmination of past efforts, where in addition to the geriatrics angle, a substantive portion of the project will be devoted to the development of geroscience. However, before embarking in this ambitious project, it is necessary to clarify what we can achieve in both the short- and the long-term. I posit that we can arrive at geroscience in the long term, but from the non-clinical perspective at least, in the next few years the effort will need to be focused on developing a sizable base of research on the biology of aging, a precursor of true geroscience. In this presentation I intend to cover the basic differences between biology of aging and geroscience, as well as a broad discussion of geroscience principles, to finish with a discussion of what can be done in these domains within the cadre of Inspire.
